Description

In the midst of a desert sandstorm, a protoceratops (left) and a velociraptor (right) are locked in an intense brawl. The velociraptor has successfully ambushed the protoceratops, but the intended victim managed to pin down the attacker and bit the predator’s right hand in retaliation. In a panic, the would-be assassin uses its free hand to claw at the opponent’s face and attempts to suffocate the prey by jabbing its sickle-claw into the neck, but the protoceratops only bites harder.
Ultimately though, the efforts of the two combatants will be in vain, and both will die shortly later.
It is still unclear how exactly they died, whether from suffocation in a sandstorm, being buried alive by an avalanche from a nearby sand dune, or simply by blood loss.
Regardless of how their fate was sealed, the fossil remains of these two dinosaurs locked in combat is considered to be a national treasure to Mongolia and is the first undeniable proof that dinosaurs took part in active predation.
